The (subpar) Reputation of Chen
NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK – As we approached the end of our Eastern Excursion route we found ourselves in the Big Apple. After we parked in SoHo (more on this in a future post) I was told to go across the street into the Patriot Radio studio. Though I was unsure of what I’d find I proceeded as advised. As I descended the steps I saw a man talking into the microphone that appeared to be in his 60’s. Was I supposed to know who he was? I then looked to his left and was surprised to a smiling Allison Gibbs (my girl, who had taken a bus from DC to surprise me for my birthday) on the air!
The next day, Allison, Adam and I took to the streets to see the town (as it was their second and first visits, respectively). Our walk was made much more pleasant due to Allison’s purchase of umbrella’s from entrepreneurial street vendors. We soon found ourselves in Battery Park where we spotted a gentleman doing caricature drawings of people.
I have never had such a drawing done and thought it’d be fun to see what features of mine he’d accentuate. Allison admitted that she too never had such a drawing so after agreeing on a price we sat down. For the next 10 minutes we watched Adam’s face with great interest as he was filming the drawing’s progress. Unfortunately we could decipher little. It was only when the artist, later identified as “Chen” handed over the drawing, did we realize just how bad this guy way.
So, as advocates of a truly free market – one where voluntary transactions largely based on reputation is key – I encourage anyone reading this that may find themselves in Battery Park looking to have a caricature done to stay away from Chen. Yet in retrospect, the sub-par drawing enabled me to underscore this point about voluntary transactions and we shared a memory, so I guess it wasn’t all bad:)
