14,000 ft. (part 2)

First off I’d like to acknowledge that blogger has updated the editing tools it offers. This is great! Now I can easily do this, and erm…well it really is a step forward. They’ve made several of things (uploading pictures, editing them once they’re ON blogger, etc) much easier. Thanks guys!

The walk up the mountain was shockingly beautiful. It’s one of those things where you can see a billion beautiful photos but when you actually see it you’re still in awe.
The rest of these photos I can’t take credit for, my camera which always runs out of battery at the least opportune moments died. Luckily my friends all brought cameras, so disaster was averted.
Up and up we went. The altitude was seriously affecting me. There was a point when I, deathly pale, stopped walking and simply stood. Upon being asked if I was okay, I started mumbling to myself about how I “had to finish it” and then continued trudging up the mountain. And I wasn’t the only one, several of my friends were dealing with varying levels of elevation sickness.
And then we reached the final peak.
No path on that thing; just a big pile of boulders. It was actually pretty scary at times. A few of those rocks were loose, and it would have been more than easy to simply fall off the side of the mountain!
right at the base of this was a miniature glacier.
Snow in summer, what fun!
But the view from the top of the glacier was my favorite, even better than from the summit
and then…and then…
…we made it to the top!

14,000 ft. (Part 1)

Last weekend, my friend had a birthday. I honor of this, she decided we should climb a “14er”, a mountain that’s peak is greater than 14,000 ft. above sea level.

It was still dark when we set out.
But as we drove into the mountains it began to lighten
We saw lots of horses and cows! Exciting to us city folk.

Finally we reached the 14er we were to climb, and got our first glimpse of what lay ahead for us.
This picture was taken toward the beginning of our hike, and the peak we climbed is the tallest one on the right hand side.
…To be continued

Cookies!

I made the most amazing cookies for my friend’s birthday.
Normally, I’d much prefer a nice slice of pie, or some ice cream, over a cookie. However, this recipe is awesome!

Soft, chewy, and very flavorful, I highly recomend this recipe.

Eggs

“You’re an egg girl aren’t you”

That’s what my friend said to me yesterday when I asked if the restaurant/diner we were going to served all-day breakfast (for the record, the didn’t).
But as for eggs, I guess I am an “egg girl”. I love love eggs. I have eggs almost every day at breakfast. Not only are eggs economical, but they are also extremely satisfying and energizing. Plus eggs have good, healthy fats in them, something that I’m pretty sure I don’t get quite enough of. Oh and eggs are also super easy to cook, versatile, and quite good!

God, I sound like the announcer in an egg infomercial.

Anyway, one of my favorite egg dishes to make are simple scrambled eggs and toast. To spice it up, I add different combinations of vegetables and herbs to the scramble – delicious!

In the Middle…

I’ve been informed by a reader that Misa Kuranaga has already been promoted to Principle for this season. This makes me very happy, she definitely deserves it!

Also, another reader pointed out that I did not mention what my second job is…I’m tempted to make up something exciting, but truth to be told all I do is harass people on the phone in an effort to get them to buy tickets to various performances.

So, follow up to my last post, another one of my favorites from the International Dance Festival was an excerpt from In the Middle Somewhat Elevated performed by Sofiane Sylve and Simon Ball. Sylve is amazing, she is not only extremely flexible, but also incredibly powerful and dynamic. Basically, great all around.

Misa…

My poor neglected blog. Why is there always more to do than is ever possible in a day? Oh, and as a par example of my wonderful intelligence, I took a second job today. Haha now I officially have no off days.
So this weekend I went up to the mountains to attend an international dance festival. This truly was the best of the best. So many amazing amazing amazing dancers! And, let me just say, my favorite of them all Misa Kuranaga. How is she only a soloist and not a principle with Boston Ballet?! She blew me away. Not only was she pretty much technically perfect, but an amazing turner (who makes fouette patterns harder as they go? Let me tell you – Misa Kuranaga), AND an amazing artist. Below is a video of Misa and Daniel Ulbricht (who also was totally insanely amazing) dancing Le Corsaire coda on saturday.

My new obession, Icelandic yogurt

Smooth, luscious, and oh so wonderfully thick. This yogurt is like Greek Yogurt, only more so! I am officially obsessed. So far I’ve only tried the plain, but with such interesting options (orange and ginger! acai! pomegranate and passion fruit!) I will have to try some of the flavors as well. Too bad it’s not available at the small Whole Foods near by me; though in a way it’s a good thing, the stuff is expensive (about $2.50). But when you’re talking about skyr, it’s understandable. Skyr is so good it’s even prompted adoring fans to write haikus (credit for this one, which can be found on the company’s website, goes to Stacy Prince)

Tangy sweet mouthful
Clean as snow and good and whole

Pudding of my heart.

P.S. if you google search “Icelandic yogurt” you can find a video of a woman talking excitedly in Icelandic about her skyr yogurt ;)

I’m back!

One of the first things I did?
I threw away my remaining sugar free foods!
So far I still haven’t broken my resolution to eliminate Aspertame, sucralose, etc from my diet!

mmm…carcinogens!

A week or so ago, I, restless and unable to sleep, reached an important decision. To quit. To quit aspartame that is. Aspartame, sucralose, and all of those other, particularly horrible chemical substances that are so popular in today’s “sugar free” obsessed world. The reason I came to this decision this was an epiphany (isn’t that a fun word?) I had while lying there, wide awake in my bed. I realized, that while I’ve always considered smoking a disgusting, and utterly stupid habit, I’m perfectly willing to food laced with carcinogens. And as someone who is totally paranoid about getting cancer, this makes utterly no since.

I’ve long known in a vague sort of way that these substances are horrible for you. But it wasn’t until after I decided to quit and I sat down to do some concrete research on them for this blog post that I realized just HOW horrible they are. And let me tell you, I am shocked and rather disturbed. Below is some of the info I found on aspartame and sucralose, two of the most commonly used sugar alternatives in “diet”, “light”, and “sugar free” foods.

  • Aspartame, which is the chemical found in NutraSweet, Equal, Spoonful, and Equal-Measure

“…accounts for over 75 percent of the adverse reactions to food additives reported to the FDA. Many of these reactions are very serious including seizures and death.(1) A few of the 90 different documented symptoms listed in the report as being caused by aspartame include: Headaches/migraines, dizziness, seizures, nausea, numbness, muscle spasms, weight gain, rashes, depression, fatigue, irritability, tachycardia, insomnia, vision problems, hearing loss, heart palpitations, breathing difficulties, anxiety attacks, slurred speech, loss of taste, tinnitus, vertigo, memory loss, and joint pain…According to researchers and physicians studying the adverse effects of aspartame, the following chronic illnesses can be triggered or worsened by ingesting of aspartame:(2) Brain tumors, multiple sclerosis, epilepsy, chronic fatigue syndrome, parkinson’s disease, alzheimer’s, mental retardation, lymphoma, birth defects, fibromyalgia, and diabetes.” – Mercola.com (for complete article go to: http://www.mercola.com/article/aspartame/dangers.htm)

  • Sucralose – the chemical in Splenda:

“The presence of chlorine is thought to be the most dangerous component of sucralose. Chlorine is considered a carcinogen and has been used in poisonous gas, disinfectants, pesticides, and plastics. The digestion and absorption of sucralose is not clear due to a lack of long-term studies on humans. The majority of studies were done on animals for short lengths of time. The alleged symptoms associated with sucralose are gastrointestinal problems (bloating, gas, diarrhea, nausea), skin irritations (rash, hives, redness, itching, swelling), wheezing, cough, runny nose, chest pains, palpitations, anxiety, anger, moods swings, depression, and itchy eyes. The only way to be sure of the safety of sucralose is to have long-term studies on humans done. ” – Medicinenet.com (complete article: http://www.medicinenet.com/artificial_sweeteners/page9.htm)

All I can say is, I’ve been EATING this stuff?? And this is government sanctioned stuff! To anyone who’s ever talked to me about why I think the FDA is pointless at best, this is why. Time for a major detox.
